eGFR Calculator (CKD-EPI 2021)

eGFR estimates how much blood your kidneys filter each minute. Australian labs report it with every creatinine, but it is capped at "> 90" and assumes average muscle mass, which is why muscular people and creatine users often see a misleadingly low number.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal eGFR?

Above 90 mL/min/1.73m² is normal. 60 to 89 is mildly reduced and often normal for age. Below 60 for three months or more defines chronic kidney disease.

Why is my eGFR low if I am muscular?

Creatinine comes from muscle. More muscle means more creatinine, which the equation reads as less filtration. A cystatin C test, which is independent of muscle mass, gives a truer estimate.

Does creatine supplementation lower eGFR?

It raises creatinine by roughly 10 to 20 µmol/L and so lowers the calculated eGFR, without any change in real kidney function.

Which equation do Australian labs use?

Most Australian labs moved to the race-free CKD-EPI 2021 equation, the one used here. Older reports may use CKD-EPI 2009, which gives slightly different values.
