Kidney Function Panel

Tests that evaluate kidney health by measuring waste products and filtration rate.

6 markers included

Purpose

The kidney function panel assesses how well your kidneys are filtering waste from your blood and maintaining electrolyte balance. It helps detect acute and chronic kidney disease, monitor medication effects on kidneys, and guide treatment for kidney conditions.

When to Order

Recommended for those with diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, family history of kidney disease, or those taking medications that affect the kidneys. Also ordered when symptoms suggest kidney problems.

Preparation Instructions

Fasting is not typically required but may be requested for some components. Stay well-hydrated unless instructed otherwise. Inform your doctor about all medications as some can affect results.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is eGFR and why is it important?
eGFR (estimated Glomerular Filtration Rate) calculates how well your kidneys filter blood using creatinine, age, sex, and race. Normal is 90+. 60-89 suggests mild decline, below 60 indicates chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Can kidney function improve?
It depends on the cause. Acute kidney injury can fully recover. Chronic kidney disease typically doesn't reverse but can be slowed or stabilized with proper management of blood pressure, blood sugar, and avoiding nephrotoxic substances.
Why is creatinine sometimes elevated in healthy people?
Muscular individuals may have higher creatinine due to more muscle mass. Intense exercise, high protein intake, certain medications, and supplements like creatine can also temporarily elevate creatinine without indicating kidney disease.
What is the BUN/Creatinine ratio used for?
The BUN/Creatinine ratio helps distinguish between different causes of kidney dysfunction. A high ratio may indicate dehydration, GI bleeding, or high protein diet. A low ratio may suggest liver disease or malnutrition.
